KENYA – Twenty-two year old Juliet Wangeci Wang’ombe is the wordsmith behind Kenyan President-Elect Uhuru Kenyatta’s 20minute long victory speech on Sunday.
Juliet describes herself as a “spoken word artist”. A graduate of Duke University in the US the youthful, Miss Wang’ombe started reciting poetry at age 18years. Her experiences at Duke University led her to write one of her most famous works entitled “A Reintroduction to Africa”.
The speech was written when the election results started coming in. Juliet describes 51year-old Mr Kenyatta as hands-on during the speechwriting process. Mr Kenyatta clearly recognises excellence.
Kenyatta’s selection of the 22year old as his speechwriter may have been a politically motivated bid to win the approval of the female and the youth vote. A suave political move by any standard. That said, Juliet Wangeci Wang’ombe’s speech has been called unifying by many Kenyans and welcomed as progressive by the international community.
